Halloween is in just a few days and perhaps some of you have decided to host a party and play some games. With that in mind, we asked our readers what their favorite horror-themed games were.
Here are the top five.5. Zombies!!! – You get to build the board as you go! Designed for 2-5 players, Zombies!!! has the players take on the role of a survivor in a city plagued with… well… zombies. The whole point of the game is to either escape or kill the most zombies. The trouble is, players don’t have an unlimited supply of resources to get the job done and new zombies enter the board all the time. It’s a fight for your life as you and 2-5 of your friends do you best to survive.
4. Gloom – Published by Atlas games, Gloom is a card game where you “assume control of the fate of an eccentric family of misfits and misanthropes.” The point of the game is to make your characters suffer the greatest tragedies you can before they die. Accented with dark art, Gloom is a great game for 2-5 players and has an expected playing time of 60 minutes.3. Arkham Horror – Set in the Cthulhu mythos created by H.P. Lovecraft, Arkham Horror takes place in the city of Arkham in the 1920s. The Ancient Ones are threatening to break through the veil into our realm and it is up to you and a group of investigators to stop them. Arkham Horror is designed for 1-8 players so you can play alone if you so please. If you’re with a group, this may be the only game you play for the night as Arkham Horror has a playing time of 120 – 240 minutes. This is one you will be settling in for the night to play.2. Dead of Winter – Billed as a “meta-cooperative psychological survivor game,” Dead of Winter is another game where you face hordes of zombies. In this game players must work together to win; however, each player has a secret goal they are trying to accomplish. Dead of Winter takes place during the winter in a survivor camp as zombies have decimated the human population. The players are working to survive as they are faced with fighting zombies, making difficult decisions that often pit their own survival against the survival of their colony. The game is designed for 3-5 players and has a playing time of 45-210 minutes.1. Betrayal at House On the Hill – Hands down the most popular game mentioned was Betrayal at House on the Hill. Published by Wizards of the Coast and Avalon Games, Betrayal is a cooperative game with a betrayer mechanic. You and a group of adventurers are exploring an old creepy mansion. The more you explore, the more Haunting it becomes until one of you betrays the others and seeks your doom. The game is designed for 3-6 players and has an average playing time of 60 minutes. Plus, with so many different adventures possible, you can play it over and over.
