Where have all the good (dead) men gone?

Our last session proved fruitful for the party, at least in information. Right as they were finishing up their battle with the vampire-esk creatures from before, a couple of mummies began lumbering towards them. Easy enough right? That is, until the tides turned, so to speak. As the party approaches, a spinning vortex opens in front of them, sucking in three of the party members, and spitting out an old friend and a couple more mummies.

As the party hacks away at their undead foes, their resolve is tested. Our heroes get knocked unconscious – some several times. But in the end, they luckily fought their way through the wrapped foes that held their ground for so long.

As the party was finishing up, an odd thing happened. Rather than the remains of the enemy simply staying on the ground, they began to intertwine together, flowing towards what looked like a black void and converging to form what looked like the head of an ancient ancestor of theirs. As it spoke, in a most ethereal way, our heroes found that he was not really a threat, but more of a guide of sorts.

Of course our summoner couldn’t resist and sent a magic missile his way. Luckily, it did nothing but fully figure him into an actual person…albeit a quite dead one.

Our ancestral mummy friend explained that there are three lesser gods of dead creatures in this plane. He is one, the god of the mummies. You could also call him the mummy king. There is also a vampire lord, and a skeleton king. For some reason, the skeleton king goes by the name Jack, and wears a tuxedo, and has a ghost dog. Personally, I think he’s been watching a bit too much tv.

The three gods are all at the mercy of one other god, however. While they have rarely seen him, his power is admittedly strong. When the party asked as to why the power of this plane is overcoming the power of the other one, he explained that the imbalance of souls is causing it. Essentially, every creature is supposed to have a mirror image of itself on this other plane. When one soul comes through to the other side, another must come through as well. The “rebuilding” of people that has been going on has created an imbalance, as there have been souls coming through and staying in the Eastcrown plane.
