Wizards of the Coast announces new block on Announcement Day

Monday, Wizards of the Coast announced a slew of new things coming to Magic: The Gathering. Since I am sure you have heard a ton about all the new stuff already, we are just going to highlight a few things.

So let’s start with the new set, Kaladesh. Slated to release September 30, 2016, this new set will feature the plane Kaladesh, the home world of the planeswalker, Chandra Nalaar – we got a hint of Kaladesh in Magic: Origins. The theme for Kaladesh is “Invent your Tomorrow.”

According to the announcement from WotC, Kaladesh will officially debut at PAX West on September 2.

The second set in the Kaladesh block will be Aether Revolt. This set will release on January 20, 2017. The theme for Aether Revolt will be, “It’s Time to Take the Power Back.”

Wizards also announced the changing of the name of Fat Packs. They will now be known as Bundle packs. They are also doing away with Intro decks and instead are offering Planeswalker Decks. The Planeswalker decks look pretty interesting and you can learn more about it by reading Mark Rosewater’s article about it.

Based on what we have seen of the plane of Kaladesh in Origins, it is possible we will see a steampunk-themed set with Kaladesh. This could be a lot of fun. I have to imagine this will create some really neat opportunities for cosplayers.

Other announcements

  • Commander 2016 – we finally get four color Commanders! I am pretty excited about this. This will hit the shelves November 11, 2016.
  • Planechase Anthology – Like the Duel Deck anthology we saw previously, Planechase Anthology, “will gather previous Planechase Products together in one convenient package.” My group and I enjoy Planechase so this should be a lot of fun. Scheduled to be released November 25, 2016.
  • Duel Decks: Nissa vs. Ob Nixilis – Like the normal duel decks, this will contain one copy of the Planeswalkers with decks to support them. These are fun for a lore-filled quick two player game.
  • Conspiracy – Take the Crown – A second conspiracy set! If you played with the first one you know the crazy shenanigans that can happen. With this set, WotC has made the packs available in “draft packs.” These will have three booster packs of the new Conspiracy set so you can grab and go straight to the draft. Draft packs will also be available in mass-market stores. These will be available on August 26 and have an MSRP of $11.99.

Holy cow that’s a lot! Basically, Wizards gave us the full schedule of Magic through January. I suppose this is a chance for us all to start saving money?

This weekend is the Modern 2016 weekend with Grand Prix being hosted in Charlotte, North Carolina and Los Angeles, California. If you’re a competitive modern player, this could be the weekend you’re waiting for.

Although I love modern, I am not much of a competitive player; however, I will be at GP:LA as a part of the staff. So, if you’re at GP:LA make sure to stop by the registration table and say hi.
